The natterjack toad is Britain's rarest amphibian, restricted to shallow, warm breeding pools on sand dunes and heathland. Their welfare depends on maintaining these highly specific breeding habitat conditions.
Natterjack toads that cannot locate suitable breeding pools experience complete reproductive failure. The species requires water temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius or above for successful tadpole development, and breeding pools that are too deep, vegetated or cool produce no surviving metamorphs. Individual animals that invest significant energy in migration to breeding sites only to find unsuitable conditions suffer the welfare cost of wasted reproductive effort. Habitat management that maintains open, shallow, sunny pools is therefore directly linked to individual welfare outcomes as well as population conservation.
