Dust bathing is a fundamental behavioural need in chickens that is denied by most commercial housing systems.
Dust bathing is so motivationally powerful in laying hens that they will perform it on wire flooring in the absence of substrate — an expression of frustrated behavioural need. Providing appropriate dustbathing substrate is a minimum welfare requirement for laying hens. Systems that prevent dustbathing entirely deny a fundamental behavioural need.
