Automatic milking systems change the daily welfare balance for cows in both positive and negative ways. The freedom to access milking voluntarily and avoid the stress of twice-daily herding provides genuine welfare benefits. Individual monitoring data enables earlier detection of health problems that would otherwise go unnoticed. However, dominant cows that monopolise AMS access prevent subordinate cows from milking, causing udder distension pain and reproductive failure in poorly managed systems. Traffic management and sufficient AMS capacity relative to herd size are essential welfare requirements. Cows that develop AMS avoidance due to teat discomfort or previous negative experiences in the unit require individual management attention.
