Merlin Welfare: UK Upland Moorland Breeding

The merlin is Britain's smallest falcon and one of its most vulnerable raptors. Its welfare on upland moorland depends on heather age structure, prey availability and freedom from disturbance.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Merlins nesting in heather moorland subject to inappropriate management experience breeding failure from direct nest disturbance and indirect habitat degradation. Muirburn that removes tall heather used for nesting, or overgrazing that opens moorland excessively, reduces the structural diversity merlins require. Adults repeatedly flushed from nests by walkers, dogs or low-flying aircraft expend energy and expose eggs and chicks to temperature extremes. The high prey dependence on meadow pipits means that any factor reducing upland pipit populations directly affects merlin feeding success and chick provisioning.
