Wild animals experience enormous amounts of suffering from predation, disease, starvation, and natural disasters, raising profound philosophical and practical questions.
Wild animal suffering represents the largest category of animal suffering by scale, yet receives the least attention and resources. Natural is not synonymous with good welfare: wild animals suffer tremendously. While direct intervention to reduce wild animal suffering is often impractical or risks greater harm, the scale demands serious philosophical and scientific attention. Disease control, contraception, and habitat management all have potential welfare dimensions.
