Lost dogs without microchips face significantly worse welfare outcomes than chipped dogs. Stray dogs experience stress from disorientation, exposure and the shelter environment. Prolonged shelter stays impose chronic stress, behavioural deterioration and increased disease risk. Dogs without microchips are more likely to be permanently separated from their owners, leading to euthanasia for lack of space or extended stress in long-term shelter accommodation. The welfare benefit of microchipping is greatest for dogs that become lost and least apparent for dogs that remain with their owners throughout their lives.
