Welfare Considerations

Cephalopod farming at commercial scale would involve large numbers of highly sentient animals with poorly understood welfare needs. The urgency is that commercial development is proceeding faster than welfare science. Octopuses in particular are intelligent, exploratory animals with strong preferences and the capacity for chronic suffering in impoverished conditions. Welfare standards must be developed now.
