Climate change is converting what were exceptional heat events into regular welfare challenges for livestock. Emergency protocols including cooling systems, water access, reduced stocking density, and veterinary preparedness reduce mortality and suffering. The cost of heat wave preparedness is far less than the cost of mass mortality events. Welfare regulations must increasingly address heat wave preparedness as a mandatory element.
