Developing and validating positive welfare indicators is transforming welfare assessment from measuring harm avoidance to measuring quality of life.
Measuring positive welfare states requires different tools from measuring negative welfare: rather than counting lesions and stereotypies, we must observe play, affiliation, and voluntary engagement. These indicators reveal whether animals are experiencing genuinely good lives rather than merely not suffering. Farms and zoos that explicitly measure and optimize positive welfare indicators provide richer, more complete welfare than those focused only on harm prevention.
