Research into salmon enrichment has identified interventions that improve welfare in commercial aquaculture settings through improved environmental complexity.
Salmon enrichment research has matured to the point where practical interventions with commercial applicability are available. Current systems, substrate provision, and lighting modifications are already being implemented in some progressive aquaculture operations. The welfare case is supported by the economic case: less aggressive, less stressed salmon grow better and have lower disease susceptibility. Commercial adoption is the key challenge for welfare improvement at scale.
