Effective welfare labelling that enables genuinely informed consumer choice remains an unfulfilled goal despite years of development in many jurisdictions.
Welfare labelling has enormous potential to enable consumer-driven welfare improvement but currently underperforms due to label proliferation, weak standards, and low comprehension. Mandatory standardized labelling with tiered welfare scores based on animal-centered outcome measures would transform consumer information. The political resistance to meaningful welfare labelling reflects exactly how much consumer power could shift if information were clear and accessible.
