Feedlot Cattle Welfare: Water Provision and Quality Standards

Water is the most critical nutrient for feedlot cattle welfare and production. Inadequate provision or poor quality causes rapid and severe welfare deterioration in intensive systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Feedlot cattle that experience water restriction or poor-quality water suffer acute physiological deterioration that impacts every body system. Dominance hierarchies in feedlot pens mean that subordinate cattle can be effectively excluded from water troughs if space is inadequate, creating hidden welfare deficits within apparently adequately watered pens. High-sulphate water that causes polioencephalomalacia results in neurological signs, blindness and death if unrecognised. Summer heat significantly increases water requirements, and feedlots that do not adjust provision accordingly impose cumulative heat stress on cattle that cannot adequately compensate through drinking.
