Elevated cortisol indicating physiological stress, increased aggression causing injury, and compromised immune function increasing disease risk all result from excessive stocking density. Evidence-based density limits create welfare floors below which operators should not fall. The alignment of welfare and production efficiency at appropriate densities creates economic co-benefits for density reduction.
