Laying hens have complex behavioural needs that require adequate enrichment in all housing systems to support good welfare outcomes.
The behavioural needs of laying hens are well established but often inadequately provided for even in supposedly enriched housing systems. Dustbathing, foraging, nesting and perching are not optional extras but core welfare requirements. Research shows hens deprived of these opportunities suffer chronic frustration and stress. Adequate litter for dustbathing, nest boxes free from competition, and perches at appropriate heights are minimum requirements, but high-welfare systems go further to provide complexity and choice throughout the housing environment.
