The welfare case for alternatives to factory farming is clear: conventional intensive animal agriculture causes massive suffering at scale that more humane systems demonstrably reduce. The range of alternatives includes higher-welfare conventional systems with improved space, enrichment, and humane slaughter; extensive systems where animals have access to natural environments; and transformative alternatives including plant-based foods, cultivated meat, and insect proteins that reduce or eliminate animal suffering entirely. No single alternative is a complete solution, but the trajectory of food system change toward reduced conventional animal product consumption and higher-welfare production methods is supported by both welfare science and growing consumer and institutional demand.
