The Five Domains Framework in Practice

The Five Domains model provides a comprehensive welfare assessment framework that goes beyond the Five Freedoms to capture both negative welfare states and positive experiences in animals.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The Five Domains framework developed by David Mellor represents a significant advance on the Five Freedoms by explicitly including positive welfare as a goal and recognising that mental state is the ultimate welfare domain that integrates all other welfare inputs. Rather than merely asking whether animals are free from suffering, the Five Domains framework asks whether they have opportunities for positive experiences including play, comfort, positive social interaction, and satisfying behavioural expression. Applying this framework in welfare assessment shifts the standard from minimum acceptable conditions to a richer conception of what a good life for an animal looks like, creating the theoretical foundation for genuinely high-welfare farming and management.
