Livestock housing design creates the physical environment within which animals spend their entire productive lives, making it a foundational welfare determinant. Poor design — including inadequate ventilation, inappropriate flooring surfaces, insufficient trough length, and bottlenecks that create aggression flashpoints — causes chronic welfare harms that management alone cannot fully compensate. Good welfare housing design is not merely about meeting minimum standards but about creating environments that actively support natural behaviour, minimise competition and stress, and enable stockpeople to observe and assess animals effectively. The integration of welfare science into building design from the planning stage is far more cost-effective than attempting to retrofit welfare improvements into already-built facilities.
