Sea lice are the primary disease challenge in Atlantic salmon farming, and treatments to control them can themselves cause significant welfare harms.
Sea lice management represents a genuine welfare dilemma in salmon farming: untreated infestations cause chronic pain and skin damage, while treatments including thermal and mechanical methods cause acute stress and injury. Chemical treatments are increasingly ineffective due to resistance. Integrated pest management approaches combining lower stocking densities, site fallowing, and strategic biological control can reduce treatment frequency. Developing vaccines and genetic resistance to lice infestation would represent a major welfare advance.
