Pet hamsters have complex welfare needs including large space requirements and nocturnal activity patterns that standard commercial housing typically fails to meet.
Hamster welfare is severely compromised in most commercial housing. Standard pet shop cages sold for hamsters provide a fraction of the space these animals require for natural behaviour. Hamsters in inadequate housing develop stereotypic behaviours within days that indicate significant chronic stress. The minimum space requirements advocated by welfare organisations — at minimum 0.5 square metres — enable sufficient burrowing, foraging, and wheel running for basic behavioural needs. Large naturalistic setups with deep substrate for burrowing, appropriate wheel size, and hiding places can enable positive welfare states.
