Outdoor pig systems represent the closest practical approach to meeting pigs' natural behavioural needs in commercial production. Rooting in natural substrate satisfies one of the pig's strongest behavioural drives. Outdoor space allows running, play, and social interaction at a scale impossible indoors. Weather welfare requires management: shade, wallows, and windbreaks protect against heat and cold extremes. Parasite management is more complex outdoors but manageable with rotational grazing and monitoring. The welfare premium for outdoor systems is substantial and evidence-based.
