Pied flycatchers are among the UK's most studied migratory birds, breeding almost exclusively in sessile oak woodland in Wales, northern England and Scotland.
Pied flycatcher welfare is increasingly threatened by phenological mismatch: oak caterpillar peaks are advancing with warming springs, but the birds cannot arrive earlier as migration timing is set by day length in Africa. Chicks hatch after peak food availability, reducing survival rates.
