Siskins can experience welfare challenges during prolonged cold when alder catkin crops are exhausted. Supplementary feeding in gardens bridges this gap but can create disease transmission risks if feeders are not kept clean. Competition from larger finches at feeders may exclude siskins from critical food sources.
