Whinchat Welfare in Upland Grassland

Whinchats are summer migrants that breed in rough grassland, heathland and upland areas in the UK, using prominent perches to hunt invertebrates and overwinter in sub-Saharan Africa.

Welfare Considerations

Whinchat welfare on UK breeding grounds is affected by grassland management intensity. Rush pasture and bracken-edge habitats have been lost to agricultural improvement and overgrazing. Chick survival is directly linked to invertebrate abundance in the surrounding vegetation structure.

What You Can Do

Support conservation management of upland rough grassland and heath
Avoid cutting or burning breeding habitat between April and August
Provide perching posts in suitable habitat where natural ones are absent
Record whinchat activity for BTO BirdTrack and Breeding Bird Survey
