Access to outdoor environments allows livestock to express natural behaviors and experience positive states that cannot be achieved in indoor-only systems.
Outdoor access represents one of the most significant welfare improvements available for many livestock species. For cattle and sheep, access to pasture enables natural grazing behavior, social interaction in more natural group compositions, and expression of play behavior. For pigs, rooting on natural substrates satisfies a powerful behavioral motivation. However, outdoor access alone is insufficient — animals must have shelter, sufficient pasture quality, protection from predators, and management of injury risks. The welfare benefits of outdoor access are greatest when integrated into holistic husbandry systems.
