Precision livestock farming technologies offer new opportunities to monitor and improve welfare in ways not possible with traditional observation methods.
Technology-assisted welfare monitoring has the potential to dramatically improve detection of welfare problems in large livestock populations. Individual animal monitoring through wearable sensors, camera systems, and automated data analysis enables early identification of illness, lameness, social problems, and behavioral changes. Crucially, technology must complement rather than replace skilled human observation — algorithms still have high false positive and false negative rates for many welfare indicators. Welfare technology is most valuable when it directs farmer attention to animals needing closer inspection rather than replacing trained stockmanship.
