Barn design profoundly influences livestock welfare in ways that persist for decades. A building constructed with poor flooring, inadequate ventilation, insufficient space, or poor lighting will impair welfare regardless of how skilled the stockperson is. Conversely, a well-designed barn with appropriate space allowances, slip-resistant flooring, natural light penetration, and effective ventilation creates conditions in which welfare can be maintained with much less effort. Investment in welfare-positive barn design at construction or retrofit stage yields long-term benefits that far outweigh the costs. Building design standards should be considered welfare infrastructure, not optional extras.
