Brachycephalic breeds selected for flat faces often cannot breathe normally, sleep comfortably, or exercise without respiratory distress. Many require surgical intervention to achieve adequate breathing. Cavalier King Charles spaniels are predisposed to a painful neurological condition where the brain is too large for the skull. These are not rare conditions — they affect substantial proportions of the breed population. Breed reform requires coordinated action by kennel clubs, breeders, and the public to change breed standards, introduce mandatory health testing, and reduce demand for extreme phenotypes.
