Atlantic halibut is one of the most challenging species to farm due to demanding biological requirements, sensitivity to stress and high rates of malformation in hatchery production.
Halibut welfare challenges span the entire production cycle from hatchery malformation rates through to slaughter. The species is highly sensitive to handling stress and shows strong fear responses in crowding scenarios. Commercial production remains small-scale partly because welfare and production challenges have not been fully solved.
