Parrot welfare in captivity is one of the most challenging areas of companion animal welfare because the gap between parrots' needs and what most owners can provide is so large. Parrots evolved for complex social lives in flock environments, with constant cognitive stimulation from foraging, communication, and environmental complexity. A parrot kept alone, in a small cage, with limited enrichment and irregular human contact, experiences chronic deprivation that manifests as feather plucking, self-mutilation, stereotypic behavior, and screaming. Many parrots outlive their owners, creating rehoming challenges for cognitively and behaviorally complex individuals. Education about true parrot welfare requirements is essential at the point of sale and adoption.
