Research has identified which enrichment materials most effectively meet pigs' behavioral needs and reduce the risk of tail biting and aggression.
The evidence on pig enrichment is clear: organic, destructible materials that engage rooting and foraging behavior are substantially more effective at satisfying behavioral motivation than hard, non-destructible objects like chains. Pigs investigate enrichment most intensively when it is novel, and materials that can be modified through use — like straw or compost — maintain engagement longer than fixed objects. The provision of straw as bedding rather than slatted floors addresses multiple welfare needs simultaneously: thermal comfort, rooting opportunity, and investigation. Where straw bedding is not possible for management reasons, a combination of suspended manipulable materials with edible elements represents the next best approach.
