Pipistrelles are the most common UK bat species but face welfare challenges from roost site loss, light pollution, and insect decline.
Pipistrelle welfare in roost sites is primarily affected by renovation disturbance during maternity season when females are nursing pups. Renovation work that seals roost access or applies pesticides to roof timbers causes mortality through abandonment of pups and blocking of return access. Light pollution has an emerging welfare impact by delaying bat emergence and potentially reducing the insect-foraging window available to energy-demanding lactating females. As the most abundant bat species, pipistrelles are also the species most frequently rescued with injuries from cat attacks, vehicle collisions, and building entanglement. Public awareness of bat welfare and roosting requirements is important for reducing these mortality causes.
