Beak trimming represents one of the most complex welfare trade-offs in laying hen production. The procedure itself causes pain and may impair sensory function, creating welfare harm. Yet injurious pecking in untrimmed flocks causes severe, widespread welfare harm through feather loss, skin wounds, and cannibalism that can affect the majority of birds. Current welfare consensus is that well-performed infrared beak trimming of day-old chicks is the least welfare-costly available approach to managing injurious pecking in commercial flocks while systems and genetics are improved. The long-term goal remains eliminating the need for beak trimming through systemic improvements.
