Polecats have recovered from near-extinction in Wales to recolonize much of England, though welfare threats from misidentification as ferrets and accidental trapping remain.
Polecat welfare in recovering populations is affected by accidental trapping and the challenges of range expansion through unfamiliar and often fragmented habitats. Polecats captured in traps set for other mustelids — or in snares set for rabbits — experience significant acute welfare harm and may die in the trap before it is checked. Misidentification of polecats as feral ferrets can lead to illegal killing. Road mortality increases as expanding populations disperse along road network corridors. Effective co-existence requires awareness campaigns that help trappers distinguish polecats, regular checking of traps, and polecat-proofing of snare programs in areas where polecats are recovering.
