Water welfare in pig production is frequently overlooked relative to feed provision, but inadequate water access causes significant welfare harm through dehydration, constipation, and urinary tract problems. Nipple drinkers with insufficient flow rates cause frustration and inadequate intake in pigs that compete to use a limited resource. In hot weather, water requirements increase dramatically and drinker capacity must be adequate to meet peak demand. Subordinate pigs in competitive group housing environments may be prevented from accessing drinkers by dominant individuals, causing chronic dehydration. Regular monitoring of water flow rates, drinker availability ratios, and water quality through the production system is essential for identifying and resolving water welfare problems.
