Water quality is to fish what air quality is to terrestrial animals — a fundamental determinant of the welfare experienced at every moment of their lives. Dissolved oxygen levels below species-specific thresholds cause acute distress characterized by surface gulping and gill pumping that precedes unconsciousness and death. Ammonia accumulation from waste metabolism damages gill tissue, reduces oxygen uptake, and causes neurological effects including disorientation and loss of equilibrium. Temperature outside the species' optimal range impairs immune function, digestion, and behavior. Managing water quality in aquaculture through appropriate stocking density, feeding management, filtration, and aeration is therefore the most fundamental welfare management activity in all fish farming systems.
