Nipple drinkers that provide only point-of-beak water access prevent all of these behaviors, causing frustration-related welfare harm and physical consequences including eye discharge from inability to clean eyes and feather condition problems from inadequate bathing opportunity. Open drinker provision that allows head immersion is a minimum welfare requirement, while bathing access through troughs, sprinklers, or in the highest welfare systems, ponds, provides additional welfare benefit.
