Bat maternity colony welfare represents the most critical welfare scenario in bat conservation because the productivity of the entire species depends on the success of maternity roosts during a narrow annual window. Nursing female bats have extremely high energetic demands and are sensitive to temperature fluctuations — roost temperatures too cool or too warm during pup dependency cause reduced milk production, pup growth failure, and mortality. Disturbance that causes females to flush from roosts leaves pups exposed to temperature extremes and without nutrition for the period of disturbance. Even brief disturbances can cause pup death from hypothermia. Legal protection of maternity roosts reflects recognition of this critical welfare period.
