Linnet Welfare on Heathland and Farmland

Linnets are seed-eating finches that have declined significantly in the UK, with losses linked to changes in agricultural practice reducing weed seed availability and heathland management reducing gorse nesting habitat.

Welfare Considerations

Linnet welfare in winter depends on access to weed seed crops and overwinter stubbles. In years when seed availability is low, flocks must travel much further and work much harder to maintain body condition. The elimination of weed seed sources through improved crop hygiene has had cascading effects on linnet and other seed-eating farmland birds.

Support agri-environment scheme options providing wild bird seed mixes and pollen-and-nectar plots
Retain areas of natural weed seed production on farms and large gardens
Record linnet flock counts via BTO BirdTrack and WeBS where relevant
Campaign for agri-environment scheme uptake on farms in known linnet stronghold areas
