Welfare Considerations

Swift welfare is directly linked to nest site availability. Renovation of older buildings without survey and mitigation has eliminated nest sites that supported the same pairs for decades. Even a single swift nestbox in a suitable location can contribute to population recovery. Swifts are slow to colonise new sites but highly persistent once established.

What You Can Do

Install swift bricks or under-eave nestboxes on south or east-facing walls at least 5m high
Play swift call recordings near nestboxes to attract scouts during May and June
Never block potential swift nest sites during renovation without first surveying for occupants
Support planning policies that require swift bricks in new residential developments
