Dairy goat kid welfare parallels many of the concerns in dairy cattle production but with additional challenges specific to the goat sector. Early kid separation causes distress in both mothers and kids, though the welfare science evidence base for goats is less developed than for cattle. Disbudding — the removal of horn buds to prevent adult horn development — is routinely performed on many goat farms without adequate analgesia, causing significant pain that is entirely preventable with local anaesthesia and NSAIDs. Male dairy kids have historically had little market value and been killed at birth, but developing markets for dairy goat kid meat — similar to rose veal in cattle — provide welfare-positive alternatives that utilize these animals rather than immediately discarding them.
