Urban foxes are increasingly common in UK towns and cities, raising welfare questions around disease management, conflict resolution and the ethics of lethal control versus tolerance approaches.
Urban fox welfare encompasses both individual animals and population-level management. Untreated mange causes prolonged suffering and is the primary welfare concern in urban populations. Lethal control of individual foxes does not reduce urban fox numbers long-term as territories are rapidly reoccupied. Non-lethal deterrence is both more humane and more effective.
