The threats facing wild penguin populations and how to balance conservation concerns with the welfare of individual birds.
Penguin welfare involves both individual and population-level considerations. Individual penguins suffering from oiling experience severe welfare harms - ingested oil causes internal damage, external oil impairs thermoregulation, and cleaning and rehabilitation processes are themselves stressful. The success of large-scale rehabilitation programs (as after the Treasure oil spill in South Africa) demonstrates that individual welfare intervention at scale is possible. Climate threats to penguin welfare are less acute but more pervasive - reduced prey availability causes prolonged chick starvation across entire breeding colonies.
