Secondary rodenticide poisoning causes a protracted and painful death through internal bleeding. Affected animals become progressively lethargic, lose coordination, and die over days as anticoagulant effects accumulate. Many die unobserved in burrows or vegetation. The scale of exposure is significant - surveys show majority of tested raptors and predatory mammals carry rodenticide burdens even without evidence of direct poisoning. Where sublethal exposure occurs, immune and reproductive effects may further compromise wildlife welfare. The solution requires both individual product restrictions and system-wide reduction in rodenticide reliance.
