Welfare Considerations

Ferrets are among the most active and cognitively complex small pets, yet they are frequently kept in cages with inadequate space and insufficient exercise. Their natural behavior involves extensive exploration, burrowing, and prey pursuit - none of which are possible in a standard cage. Inadequate exercise and stimulation leads to obesity, frustration behaviors, and muscle weakness. Ferrets kept alone show signs of depression and reduced welfare. Dietary needs for a high-protein carnivore diet are often not met in commercial ferret foods. Meeting ferret welfare needs requires significant owner commitment.
