Common cranes were reintroduced to the Somerset Levels by the Great Crane Project and are establishing a self-sustaining population for the first time in Britain in over 400 years.
Crane welfare during reintroduction requires careful management of habituation to humans, predator pressure and food availability. Hand-reared birds must maintain sufficient wariness of humans and predators to survive in the wild. Post-release monitoring and targeted management of known territories is essential to individual welfare and programme success.
