Shrimp slaughter welfare is one of the most contested areas in animal welfare science, sitting at the intersection of scientific uncertainty and enormous scale. Current evidence suggests decapod crustaceans have nociceptors and show behavioral responses consistent with pain experience, though the nature of their subjective experience remains disputed. The scale of shrimp production - trillions of animals annually - means that even if the welfare significance per individual is uncertain, the potential aggregate welfare impact is enormous. Development of rapid, humane slaughter methods is warranted on precautionary grounds given this scale and uncertainty.
