Pet snake welfare is significantly compromised in many keeping situations. The enclosure sizes recommended and commonly sold bear no relationship to the spatial needs of wild snakes. Wild ball pythons occupy home ranges of several hectares - captive snakes in small plastic tubs cannot thermoregulate appropriately, exercise, or express normal exploratory behavior. Feeding frozen-thawed prey once per week, while nutritionally adequate, provides none of the behavioral complexity of natural hunting. Many captive snakes show chronic low-grade stress from thermal, spatial, and behavioral deprivation that may not be recognized by owners focused on physical health.
