Rabbits require significantly more space than traditional hutch sizes provide, and the RSPCA and RWAF recommend a minimum combined living space that allows full body stretching, running and jumping.
Rabbit housing welfare is one of the most common and easily addressable companion animal welfare failures. Small hutch housing prevents natural locomotion, posture and behaviours that are intrinsic to rabbit welfare. The rabbit in a small hutch is equivalent to a dog kept permanently in a travel crate: fundamentally inadequate regardless of quality of other care.
