Dotterel Welfare During UK Mountain Migration

Dotterels are charismatic small waders that pass through UK mountains in spring on their way to Scandinavian breeding grounds, and a small population breeds on Scottish mountain plateaux.

Welfare Considerations

Dotterel welfare during migration and breeding is primarily threatened by disturbance at traditional stop-over sites and by climate-driven habitat contraction at breeding altitude. Small migrating groups called 'trips' are vulnerable to repeated disturbance from mountain walkers that forces them to expend energy relocating during a critical fuelling period.

What You Can Do

Observe dotterels from a distance if encountered on mountain plateaux in late April and May
Do not attempt to approach resting dotterel groups for photographs that could cause disturbance
