White-tailed sea eagles were reintroduced to Scotland from Norway from 1975 and more recently to southern England, with welfare protocols for translocated birds and colony establishment being carefully managed.
Sea eagle welfare in reintroduced populations is threatened by illegal persecution including poisoning and disturbance of nests, despite full legal protection. Individual birds from reintroduction programmes represent significant investment and irreplaceable conservation value. Satellite tracking allows welfare monitoring but cannot prevent persecution events.
